In Australia and other developed nations drowning is one of the three leading causes of accidental death in 0-4 year olds. In some jurisdictions drowning is in fact the leading cause of injury related death in this age group. Sadly the death toll from drowning is only part of the picture..........

Every year hundreds of Australian children aged 0-4 are admitted to hospital following a near drowning. Tragically around 35 children in this age group will lose their lives and almost one quarter (22.5%) of those admitted to hospital following a near drowning will suffer a brain injury due to lack of oxygen that will result in disabilities for life.  Many of the children who survive with brain injuries will need a wide range of equipment, support and services and the Samuel Morris Foundation is here to help provide them and advocate on behalf  of these children and their families.

The Samuel Morris Foundation, established in March 2007, is Australia's only charity supporting children disabled by near drowning (or other hypoxic brain injuries) and preventing future drowning deaths and disabilities through education and awareness.

The Solution to drowning prevention is not a one size fixes all approach, and no one thing in isolation will prevent a child drowning, however there are four key factors that are proven to reduce the risk of drowning. They are:

  • Supervision of children (proximity, attention, continuity)
  • Pool Fences and other barriers to prevent children gaining access to the water
  • Water familiarisation / learn to swim
  • Emergency Plans - Knowing CPR

The Samuel Morris Foundation is a proud winner of the "Patrons Award for the most significant contribution to water safety with a focus on an under-represented group" at 2008 NSW Water Safety Awards

“Probably the greatest irony in me becoming an Olympic swimmer is that I could have drowned before I was two years old. Twice I was plucked from the bottom of the pool by my father and it’s unfortunate to know that thirty years on childhood drownings are as high as ever. Despite all the warnings child drowning continues to be a tragic part of Australian society. I am honoured to be a part of the Samuel Morris Foundation as I was one of the lucky survivors, many children are not as fortunate. It is reassuring to know that the foundation is supporting children disabled by near drowning and is continuing to promote prevention of future deaths and disability from drowning . Together we can all make a huge difference”.

By making a donation YOU can help the Samuel Morris Foundation provide equipment to disabled children, and help the Samuel Morris Foundation to prevent future drowning deaths and disabilities.

It is no secret that people are more inclined to purchase from companies who are working to improve our world. Cause marketing is a great way to both draw people to your company and create good will, and it's definitely something small businesses can take part in too.

As a small business owner how much bang for your buck do you get with a social good campaign with the Major Charities? If you are a small business owner are you going to achieve measurable exposure for your donations worth hundreds of dollars instead of the many thousands that Major Corporates put towards these charities, and how much of this is then spent on glossy magazine, television, radio or newspaper advertising?

With so many companies pledging to a single large charity, you need to make your businesses campaign stand out. Unless you can convince the large charities that you will be able to raise a significant amount for their organisation, they probably won't be interested in actively working WITH YOU.

Individuals tend to be less motivated to rally behind larger non-profits/charities because they often feel their small contribution won't make enough of an impact. People want to feel their contribution counts, however small it may be. Campaigns such as "Liking" a companies Fan Page for a $1 donation to a powerhouse charity likely won't be as inspiring as giving the same small amount to a smaller charity that might be perceived as more in need of the money.

At the Samuel Morris Foundation your donations and contributions through cause marketing campaigns DIRECTLY impact on supporting children with brain injuries and preventing future deaths and disabilities. We have no major overheads, all of our management and staff are volunteers and we are eager to WORK WITH YOUR BUSINESS to find ways that your helping us can help you. So as a small business owner if you are looking to actively work with a charity that is as equally keen to work with your business, please get in touch with us by giving us a call or emailing us.
