Ambassadors

Scott Cam is one of Australia’s most loved television personalities, with a laidback larrikin attitude that millions of Australian’s can relate to.

Scott first appeared on Nine's ‘Backyard Blitz’ in 2000 as the multi award-winning show’s resident builder/carpenter, until the show’s completion in 2007. During that time, the huge popularity of Backyard Blitz was acknowledged when it won Logies for Most Popular Lifestyle Program on five consecutive occasions, and Scott’s general fun loving nature endeared him to the Australian public.

Scott also appeared on Nine’s hugely successful ‘Renovation Rescue’ specials, which brought together the stars of Australia’s favourite lifestyle shows as they offered a helping hand to someone deserving of a good turn, and of course appeared on ‘Burke’s Backyard.’

Scott featured in his own live lifestyle program in 2007, ‘Our Place’, and is presently co-hosting Nine’s immensely popular lifestyle program ‘Domestic Blitz’. It was through his role on Domestic Blitz that Scott first came into contact with the Samuel Morris Foundation.

In between his TV work, Scott co-hosted Triple M’s popular Saturday morning show ‘Wrong Side of the Bed’ and has made regular guest radio appearances on 2UE’s ‘Mornings with Steve Price’.

Scott is also currently co-hosting "Home Improvement" on Melbourne radio MTR1377. The Home Improvement Show is for anyone who wants to make sure their DIY efforts are not a disaster. The show is full of handy things, safety tips, information on new tools and equipment, interviews with people who have achieved great results at home, and involves specialists on various topics being on hand to take open line calls giving advice to listeners.

He has written two books on building and renovating: ‘ Out the Back’ and ‘Home Maintenance for Knuckleheads’.

Scott said "I am very pleased to be an ambassador for The Samuel Morris Foundation. They do tremendous work with pool safety awareness and give ongoing support to families who have had tragedies in their lives. If one young life can be saved, The Samuel Morris Foundation has done their job"

David Bradbury MP, Federal Member for Lindsay

David Bradbury, Jo-ann, Michael and Samuel Morris, Sam Riley at Parliament House for the launch of the National Drowning Report.

You can’t take pool safety seriously enough. That is the powerful message of the Samuel Morris Foundation.

Michael and Jo-Ann Morris established the Foundation after their son, Samuel, suffered a near-drowning incident in the family’s backyard pool, and they have campaigned  tirelessly since  to improve parents’ awareness of the need to supervise their children around water and make sure their pools are properly fenced.

I congratulate the Samuel Morris Foundation for its valuable contribution to our community and its work to support families and improve safety for children around water.

  Senator Carol Brown

Each year thousands of Australians enjoy the water - whether in a pool or at the beach. Indeed, in Australia, swimming is all but considered a national past time.

However despite the hard work of organisations such as the Samuel Morris Foundation and Royal Life Saving Society to promote water safety - water based accidents, particularly involving young children continue to occur.

As a parent of young children I know only too well the importance of water safety - with my own young daughter luckily escaping serious harm after falling into a backyard water feature.

While she now enjoys the water and takes swimming lessons - I am well aware that many other children are not as lucky to be granted a second chance.

35 Children (aged under five) drown each year around the country, and for every one of these tragic deaths an additional three to four children are admitted to hospital as a result of a near drowning with a significant number of these suffering brain damage as a result.

The Royal Life Saving Society of Australia have commenced a campaign to encourage all state and territory governments to support the push for nationally consistent pool fencing regulations - a campaign that I support.

The evidence suggests that such measures would have significant benefits in terms of reducing the number of toddler deaths and near drowning that occur each year.

However, this is only the start.

I commend the work the Samuel Morris Foundation does in supporting children disabled by near drowning or other hypoxic brain injuries.

I very much look forward to promoting its work and helping to raise awareness of the importance of water safety particularly in my home state of Tasmania.
